Did You Lose a Ring?

"It's not like there's a phone number engraved inside the ring where they could just call the person that lost it.." ~C.B.

Google image
A couple came in the store a few months ago. They showed me a beautiful diamond wedding ring they had found walking on the beach on an out of state vacation. The ring held a diamond over one carat in size and I estimated the retail value at over $7,500!
They found it back in October and have spent the last 4 months trying to locate the owner. They have reported it to the police department in the town they found it, and posted a "Found" notice on Craig's List in that vacation town. They watched newspaper listings in the "Lost and Found" section of the paper from that area. There is no way of knowing how long the ring has been buried in the sand on that beach, and no identifying markings that could link it to a person, time, or place.
They did more hunting than most would, but not because they are more honest than others. Most people want to give back a lost item to its rightful owner! They empathize with the person that lost it. They just don't know how to find that person! It's not like there's a phone number engraved inside the ring where they could just call the person that lost it...Oh Wait!...that's a GREAT IDEA!
For a few extra dollars, you could have your phone number engraved inside your ring, hidden from view while you are wearing it, but easy to identify if someone were to find it!

Just think of the benefits of having your number engraved inside your valuable ring:
  • Lost Ring-Good Samaritan can easily contact you!
  • Stolen Ring-Police and Pawn Dealers alike could easily identify the rightful owner by your easy-to-spot telephone number engraved inside!

Changing your phone number? No problem if your ring is gold, silver, platinum or palladium. The old number can be buffed out and the new number engraved.
Stop in and schedule to have your ring professionally checked, cleaned and engraved by our awesome on-site Jewelry Shop.

Make it memorable

There is a sweetness that can't be compared to the memory attached to a piece of keepsake jewelry.
People get a dreamy look in their eye when they re-live why they love certain pieces of their jewelry...and let me tell you, it doesn't matter if it's a costume bead necklace from their grandchild or a diamond necklace from their late husband...no matter what it's valued at monetarily, it's priceless for the special way it made them feel when it was given!
Remember this when shopping for your someone special.
No matter the amount you plan to spend, attach a sweet meaning to the item for an extra special impact!

Here are only a few ideas, but let your imagination run wild and your gift will be a hit:

  1. If it's a 5 Year wedding anniversary, buy a ring with 5 diamonds...one for each year you have loved being married to her. Want to really knock her socks off? Write a diamond worthy memory you shared from each year you've been married in an anniversary card!
  2. Buy her a charm bracelet that you add a charm for special memories as they happen, like a new house, a child born, new puppy, a dream vacation...the list is endless!
  3. Do you have a special, sweet nickname for her? Have it engraved on a delicate heart charm she wears around her neck!
  4. Even though many people have stopped wearing a wristwatch everyday, the diamond dress watch is still a classic piece of essential  jewelry. Have the back engraved with a message like "My Love For You is Timeless".
Have any great ideas of ways to make it more memorable or stories of memorable gifts you've gotten, we'd love to hear them in the comments below!

Insuring Your Jewelry

The question is often asked "What is the best way to insure my new jewelry?"
Many people own their own homes and are able to add a "rider" to their homeowner's insurance policy.
In this event, the customer needs to contact their agent and discuss the specifics of cost, coverage, claims and necessary paperwork that the agency may need to cover the item(s).
We are able to supply an insurance appraisal, free of charge, with a new purchase from our store. We are also able to provide an appraisal for most any other jewelry item for a reasonable fee.
There is an alternative to using your homeowners insurance policy. We can refer you to Jewelers Mutual, one of the biggest names in Jewelers Insurance. They offer a personal jewelry insurance that covers against loss, damage, theft and even mysterious disappearance.
Jewelers Mutual has a 99% satisfaction rating in customer claims surveys. Visit www.JewelersMutualInfo.com and enter our jewelers code: A01962.

Sizing a Ring

1/26/2015

A ring mandrel is used to determine the current size of your ring.
Choose a ring sizer that most matches the width of the ring you are having sized.
Only certain types of bands can be stretched or shrunk. Otherwise, rings need to be cut to either remove or add metal for sizing.
If you have ever tried to wear a ring that was way too tight, or one so loose that it spun around your finger, you know how uncomfortable it can be;
too tight...you feel claustrophobic, too loose...you run the risk of losing the ring!

It is also potentially dangerous to wear an incorrect size.
Wearing a ring too tight will cause the muscle of the finger, under the ring, to atrophy, eventually cutting a "groove" into your finger.
Wearing a ring too loose can  harm the ring. Depending on the softness of the metal, the ring will bend easier with no support from the snugness on the finger, and when the stone falls to the palm side of your hand, it leaves it exposed to much more wear causing abrasions and breaks. The prongs that hold the stones will also wear out and snag faster than normal!

Rings are sized by cutting the ring at the back of the shank, opening up the ring to the desired size, and then "patching in" a piece of sizing stock of the appropriate metal. The appropriate gold, platinum or silver solder is used to weld the joint(s) back together, and then the ring is polished to its original luster.
Sizing a ring, when done correctly, will not hurt the ring. A good jeweler knows what stones are able to be heated and which stones need to be removed to protect them while sizing. Also, certain types of settings can only be sized one to two sizes up or down, because changing the diameter of the ring may cause the stones to loosen or potentially break from too much pressure.

Plain bands can be stretched or shrunk using a special machine.
Depending on the amount the ring is being changed, the jeweler may also need to  anneal it  (to heat and then slowly cool in order to make it stronger) to keep it from cracking during the sizing process.  This process will usually cost less, as it is less labor intensive and does not cost the jeweler any gold.

Keep the following tips in mind:
  • Width matters. Wide rings fit snugger than narrow rings. Make sure you use a sizer that closely matches the width of your ring.
  • Domed or flat? If your ring has a domed top it will cause your ring to feel loose. Conversely,  the flatter the ring fits to your finger the more snug it will feel.
  • Rings can be sized to 1/4 sizes. Most ring sizers only come in half and whole sizes, but a good bench jeweler can size in between. Choose a size that can fit over the largest part of your finger without getting stuck. Everybody has their own preference on how they like to wear their ring; one person might like to wear a ring very tight, while another might like to have a little space to accommodate for swelling. Don't just try on one size. Try on multiple sizes before making your final choice.
  • Everybody swells, at least a little. Your finger size can change as much as a full size during a 24 hour period. Pay attention to the way your fingers feel. There is no way for a jeweler to accommodate this change in finger size, rings can't be made stretchy, like clothes! Our best advise is to know your own hand. If your fingers swell frequently, choose a slightly larger size. If you work in cold conditions, which can cause your fingers to shrink, choose a more snug size while your fingers are warm.  Pick a size that will fit you MOST of the time.
  • It is ultimately your decision! As you are being assisted to determine your best size, we may offer suggestions and tips for achieving the best fit, but do not let anyone TELL you what size you wear because, changing your mind may cost YOU more money in re-sizing charges.

Tips for Getting Off a "Stuck" Ring

1/26/2015

WE CAN HELP!
We are able to help you remove a stuck ring, and we are also able to safely cut the ring off your finger if none of the above tips work.  There are times when cutting the ring off is absolutely necessary, and when we have to resort to cutting it, we want you to understand that torquing it to remove it can damage the ring and cause it to need more repairs than just sizing. The majority of rings can be repaired to like-new condition, though.
PLEASE, NOTE:
We cannot remove rings if your hand is in need of medical assistance. We will not cut rings off if your finger or hand is stoved or broken. We will not cut rings away from open wounds. We are not medical personnel, and so we reserve the right to refuse to remove a ring if we feel you need medical assistance.
If your finger has ever had a "muffin-top" from wearing your ring too tight, if you can't get it off, and you if fear you might have to have it cut off...try these tips first:
  • Relax! Do not try to force the ring off your finger. Pulling on it, and panicking will only cause your finger to swell more. As long as your finger still has circulation, let your hand rest for a day before trying again.
  • Soak your hand in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes. Cold reduces swelling.
  • Anti-inflammatory medicine for arthritic knuckles (if arthritis is the reason your ring is stuck) can help reduce your knuckles long enough for you to remove your rings. Warning! We do not recommend taking medicine not prescribed to you!
  • Windex works! I know, I know...you've tried butter, soap, oil etc. and they didn't work, but every one of those products take up space, where window cleaner just makes things slippery. The bonus is that window cleaner won't gunk up the ring, nor will it hurt your stones or metals. Spray liberally, and try to wiggle and spin the ring over the chunky part of your finger.
  • Don't use side snips! Your well meaning handyman may suggest he can snip it off for you...don't do it! Side snips will cause an uneven joint and metal damage, which will cost you more in repairs! Remember, we don't charge to cut your rings off, and our repair prices are reasonable and more than competitive!
  • Do you have any good solutions for removing stuck rings? We'd love to hear from you!

Lost and Found

11/2/2013

On a trip into Summit Mall Wednesday evening, my husband, daughter and I crossed the path of two young women hunting for something in the parking lot at the entrance of the Macy's north doors. Curiously I asked what they were looking for. "I lost my diamond earring. It snagged when I was putting my purse on my shoulder" one of the women said sadly.  They had been searching for almost an hour by that time!
I immediately sent my husband and daughter on ahead without me as I flipped my phones flashlight on.  The women protested, but I happily continued to hunt explaining that "it is one of my specialties...hunting for small stuff!"
Within the next ten minutes, there were up to ten people scouring the ground for the lost earring.  Every person that passed by stopped to help!  The young woman was embarrassed at the trouble she thought she was causing. She explained, though, that it was a gift from husband for their first Christmas together.  I heard reassurances from quite a few people that it was no bother! After all, haven't we all lost something that was valuable, and felt its loss, not because of its monetary value, but the sentiment attached to it?
A moment later, a gentleman stooped down and picked up something "Is this it?" IT WAS! He had found the earring! The young woman squealed with delight!
We each proceeded on our way, all wearing smiles, happy to have been a part of the moment!
