How to Inspect Your Own Jewelry

It is a good idea to have a professional jeweler inspect your jewelry at least once a year, but in between, learning to inspect your own jewelry for potential problems can save you thousands of dollars.
It is best if you use magnification. A 10 power loupe is a great tool to have when you own jewelry. You can also use your digital camera’s macro setting to take a picture and then enlarge the picture on your computer screen. Here is what to look for,
  • You want to see rounded prongs that extend over the edge of the stone(s) and fold over the top.
  • Look for mismatched prongs, torn metal and jagged edges. These are all signs that prongs are missing or damaged.
  • Check the sides and bottom of the mounting. Become familiar with your jewelry under magnification while it is new and in good condition because you will more easily recognize when something is amiss later.
  • Lastly, hold the ring firmly between your thumb and middle finger next to your ear,and use your index finger to tap, tap, tap the side of the ring beside the stones. Make it a habit to “listen” to your ring often. When stones are tight, you should only hear the single tapping sound, but when stones are loose, even the smallest of loose stones will rattle, so the tapping action will make them click against the sides of their setting. If you hear a rattle, it is best not to wear the ring until you have a chance to have your jeweler check and tighten any loose stones.
